     Summary Details
    1. Introduce the activity We are going to talk about the order that we do different activities. Let’s try one together.
    2. Sequence familiar routines I brush my teeth every day.  Do you brush your teeth?  Let’s talk about what we do first, second, third, and last when we brush our teeth.  What do you need first so that you can brush your teeth?   Children respond.  Yes, toothbrush, toothpaste, and cup.  We need these things first. You may opt to write these on the board, spelling aloud each item as you write it.

After we have these things, what happens next?  Children respond.  Yes, we put the toothpaste on the toothbrush.  Look, I have a picture of a little girl doing just that.

Once the toothpaste is on the toothbrush, what happens next? Children respond.  Yes, you brush your teeth.  Here is a picture of the little girl brushing her teeth.

So the order we brush our teeth is:  first get your toothbrush, toothpaste, and cup.  Second, put the toothpaste on the toothbrush.  Then, brush your teeth.  What happens last?   Children respond.  Yes, last we rinse out our mouth.  That is the last picture I have of the little girl.

    3. Review the order of the picture cards and recognize that sentences are made up of words Let’s look at the pictures of the little girl.  Use your words to tell me the order that the little girl brushes her teeth, or the order of how you brush your teeth.  Children respond.

Look!  Who can tell me what is on the back of each of these cards?  Children respond.  Yes, there are words on the back of the cards.  These words make up a sentence about the picture.  Let’s count the words that are in each sentence.

Point to the words on the card and count aloud each word.

    Example:

Read, “The girl puts toothpaste on the toothbrush.”  That is 7 words.  I am going to clap for each word that is my sentence.  Listen.   The (clap) girl (clap) puts (clap) toothpaste (clap) on (clap) the (clap) toothbrush (clap).  I clapped 7 times because there are 7 words in this sentence.

    4. Repeat activity discussing other familiar routines Let’s talk about the order of another activity.
    extension activities
In the morning when you are discussing the events of the day, use temporal terms such as first, second, third, last, etc..  After you have told the children the daily schedule using these terms, ask them to review with you what is going to happen during their day.  Prompt them to use temporal terms.
